In honor of the inauguration of President Barack Obama, this year’s event is dedicated to “making a difference.” DCIFF Executive Director and Founder Carol Bidault says, “This city has come alive with hope and the spirit of change, and we want to present films that highlight the value of reaching out to help others and participating in life.”
Themes for this year's film sessions include Cine Latino, Comedy (Just for Laughs), Disabilities, the Environment (Going Green), Food, Foreign Language (French, Spanish, Turkish), Human Rights (Women, Gay), Immigration (Asia, Africa, India, Latin America, Middle East), Making a Difference, Native America, Open Content (Rehash/Remix), the Politics of Film, Romance (Finding Love), Searching for a Higher Power (Christian, Jewish, Muslim) and Senior moments.
In addition to film sessions, the festival will host workshops and seminars by industry professionals, a concurrent music festival and an Advocacy Forum on Capitol Hill where filmmakers meet with lawmakers to discuss matters of importance to the industry.
“Our goal is to stimulate fervent discussion about original ideas and encourage independent thinkers,” says Bidault. “That is what independent film culture is about, and that is what DCIFF is about.”
The Washington DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF) is an award-winning annual event that showcases over 100 films in themed sessions nightly. Held in March, the DCIFF is a non-profit organization of volunteers serving the Capital area since 1999.
