“An innovative and entertaining approach to the documenting of an important historical period.” – Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times
Brazil’s radical Tropicalia movement will come to life onstage next week, with “Brazilian Tropicalia – Daring Days,” Saturday, January 24 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica. The occasion celebrates 2009 as the 30th year of KPFK’s “Brazilian Hour,” hosted by Sergio Mielniczenko, the DJ responsible for importing modern Brazilian culture into Los Angeles for over three decades. The free concert will recreate the Tropicalia experience with classic recordings by Caetono Veloso, Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil, live performances by local artists and DJs blended with live visuals, video and dance.
Sergio Mielniczenko is the acclaimed host of “The Brazilian Hour” of KPFK’s series “The Global Village,” broadcast live on Fridays, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and streaming worldwide through KPFK’s website. Having got his start working for the Brazilian embassy in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Sergio has since been responsible for spreading the radical new sounds from his homeland to his current home. Friend to artists such as Milton Nascimento and Caetono Veloso, Mielniczenko is largely recognized as the ambassador of Brazilian culture to the American public.
Beginning in the late 60s, Brazilian culture was revolutionized by such innovative musical artists as Os Mutantes and Veloso with the Tropicalia movement. Not only was the movement meant to challenge the conventions of Brazilian music, blending the traditional with electric instrumentation and rock-and-roll rhythms, it also challenged the military dictatorship then in power. This month, Mielniczenko will celebrate the movement and its continuing influence on Brazilian – as well as worldwide – culture with a visual and musical spectacle that will celebrate Tropicalia’s continued relevance in today’s world as well as Los Angeles’ 30-year love affair with Brazilian music.
