When disaster strikes and the sole recovery of computer data depends on reliable backup, devastation reaches even more agonizing levels when the restore function fails and the consumer, not skilled in the ways of computer technology, is at the mercy of computer geeks.

Disaster recovery might not be something you think about everyday. But it’s something that should be alive and ready everyday. For the consumer and business continuity planning can help survive many kinds of adverse events.

Grand Lifestyle Publisher, the Miami-based online publisher serving the general public as “Your How To Source: Issues of Value, Ethics, Human Needs and Deeds” (GrandLifestyle.com) is conducting research for a white paper focusing on “Online Backup For the Consumer: How Safe Are Your Data?”

The urgent need for such a study surfaced when Grand Lifestyle’s publisher, Heinz Dinter, PhD, experienced the devastating consequences of online backup failure because he relied on the well-known backup service Carbonite (carbonite.com) offered by Boston-based Carbonite, Inc.

“My nightmare was compleat,” recalls the experienced computer entrepreneur and publisher whose computer technology experience covers 50 years. “When I attempted to restore files that were allegedly saved by Carbonite, I failed, and seeking the help of Carbonite technical support personnel did not help either,” the frustrated Carbonite subscriber says. “After 23 days of trying and involving 8 so-called Carbonite customer support experts, I uninstalled the Carbonite program, suffer the permanent loss of many years of highly important data, and now deal with the prospect of serious damage to my publishing business.”

The white paper research will focus on and report on the following:

• What is online backup/restore and how does it work?
• Is there a flaw in the concept and offering of online backup service?
• How to confirm the ability and reliability of the service offered.
• How to test the restore function before disaster strikes.
• How secure are your data, both in transit and while stored on the service provider’s computer?
• To what extent, if any, are you in the clutches of the online backup provider you select?
• What happens if the online backup service provider’s business fails?
• What happens if dishonest people are in the employ of the online backup service provider?
• How can you ascertain the service provider’s competence, honesty, and integrity?
• How realistic are endorsements from prominent entities?
• What are the alternatives to online backup services?

Grand Lifestyle is urging people who are using online backup services to contribute to the research study with their experiences, suggestions and comments.

“I consider it not only a moral obligation to dig into this problem and seek answers for the consumer computer user,” explains Dr. Dinter, “I owe it to the general public to put my 50 years of experience to use in support of ensuring computer service providers deliver competence, honesty and integrity.”

“Relying on backup service can maim you, if it explodes,” warns Dr. Dinter. “I came face to face with an explosive like carbonite and the suffering I was forced to endure must not be allowed to rob others of peace of mind.”
“Now I know how Han Solo felt when he was trapped in carbonite. Screaming on earth can be and must be heard. Every computer user deserves sleeping well at night knowing his data are safe,” says the computer expert turned publisher.

The topic of online backup will be discussed at a Grand Lifestyle One-On-One Webinar on January 28, 2009.

Dr. Dinter’s professional career commenced in 1958 as a data processing specialist and computer programmer in the U.S. Air Force. In the 1960s he served as manager of the University of Florida Computing Center.

His entrepreneurial career began in 1967 when he founded a computer-technology-based company. As president he was responsible for offering computer products and services to a wide range of businesses and governmental organizations.

As founder and chairman of the Board of Advisors of The Institute for Personal Computing in 1983, Dr. Dinter contributed his efforts to the advancement of the personal computer.
Also in the early ’80s, he joined the editorial board of a new personal computing magazine.
Driven by his newsletter, Desktop Publishing Dialog, he organized and presented seminars and exhibits and founded the American Cartridge Recycling Association to serve this rapidly growing industry with education, information, and services.

In 1990 he founded Grand Lifestyle magazine, initially published in printed form and now on the Internet.
Dr. Dinter received his B.S. in mathematics cum laude, M.A. in management, and PhD. in business administration and corporate finance from the University of Florida.
