Chandrayaan-1 reached final moon orbit on 11th November; and the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) landed successfully on 14th November. In showcasing the capabilities and expertise of ISRO, the first Indian Moon Mission has been a resounding success.
The success of Chandrayaan-1 is also the success of India’s private sector engineering capabilities. Captronic Systems is one company that has contributed to the success of the first Indian Moon Mission. Its contributions have been in the areas of Test & Measurement and Data Acquisition; with respect to the satellite and the launch vehicle. A few of the critical subsystems that have used Captronic Systems solutions are:
Chandrayaan-1 was first tested at ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC), in a thermo-vacuum chamber. Captronic Systems have supplied the Data Acquisition systems, to acquire data from the satellite, while it was being tested in the chamber.
Once Chandrayaan-1 has reached the final orbit; it is then maintained in orbit, as well as small changes in position executed, by a set of flywheels called Reaction Wheels. The Reaction Wheels were made by the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU), Thiruvananthapuram; and these Reaction Wheels were tested in the IISU clean room by a Captronic System test set-up.
The Moon Impact Probe (MIP) has payloads, and the data being sent by these payloads will be received at the Indian Deep Space Network (DSN), Byalalu. The data are then translated using software supplied by Captronic Systems.
The success of the first Indian Moon Mission is a testament to the importance of well thought out, innovative Test & Measurement routines in the success of low-gestation drawing board-to-deployment projects. Today, state-of-the-art Test & Measurement routines spell the difference between success and failure of such complex engineering projects.
In partnership with National Instruments, a pioneer in Graphical System Design, Captronic Systems is committed to continuous innovation in the field of Test & Measurement.
