Cleanup of oil spills traditionally relied on chemical surfactants but bio-based surfactants are gaining ground as a safer and more environment-friendly alternative. One of the more effective biosurfactants developed thus far is Japan Energy Corp's JE1058BS, developed by the company's Bio Research Center. JE1058BS was shown to reduce the oil content of oil-contaminated seawater by 81.8% after a 28 day period."
She further observed, "Aside from being an oil spill remediation agent, JE1058BS can also be applied in the area of bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil, in-situ soil flushing, and microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR)."
