As the country prepares to host the event, new stadiums, hotels and other tourist facilities are being built to prepare for the influx of visitors. These facilities will need to be maintained and managed during and after the tournament, thereby creating opportunities for FM companies.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (buildingtechnologies.frost.com), Facilities Management in South Africa, reveals that the market earned $1.32 billion in revenues in 2007 and estimates this to more than double by 2014 to reach $2.59 billion.
“Cost reduction and efficiency are motivating businesses to outsource the management of their facilities,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sostina Shiri. “FM companies are offering to align their services with corporate objectives and are working closely with their clients to provide additional value to business enterprises and public institutions.”
However, the perception that FM is an unnecessary additional cost is hindering the growth of the industry in South Africa, as many businesses still prefer to keep the management of their facilities in-house.
“A few larger companies still prefer to retain the management of their facilities,” explains Shiri. “To demonstrate their value, FM participants have to pay considerable attention to what customers are asking for and actively demonstrate understanding and a willingness to evolve to meet customer needs.”
