After trying a number of methods that didn't work, the Army used two AutoDrill 2100 series machines to successfully demilitarize over 40,000 rounds of obsolescent tank shells from the Vietnam era. The drills were used to remove pyrotechnic tracer material from the base of the projectile. The resulting inert material comprised several hundred tons of aluminum and steel which were then recycled.

The customer from the United States Army who was using the drill to permanently demilitarize the tank ammo eventually gave a presentation at a government show in Las Vegas, NV. The presentation featured photos and additional information from the process.

One of the challenges of the process was the fact that the tracers would often ignite and shoot red hot material back onto the AutoDrill series 2100 unit. According to the customer, the AutoDrill machine was the only solution they tested that actually worked. The highly reliable AutoDrill machine is now being quoted to the U.S Army and other customers doing similar operations with single and multiple spindle drilling heads in the design.

In the future, AutoDrill hopes to become more involved in the demilitarization and recycling of obsolete weaponry and components. AutoDrill is dedicated to improving the environment for current and future generations.

AutoDrill offers free application and design assistance. Free CAD drawings are available for all their equipment.
