The Somerville YMCA is a prominent fixture in the community; offering a variety of programs, events and activities for local youth and families. On Friday, November 7, the Somerville Y will launch the newest WARM2Kids Learning Center. Funded by Jeffrey Goldshine and family, the “Melvyn and Claire Goldshine Learning Center” is the first of several WARM2Kids centers scheduled to open in Massachusetts, New Jersey and other locations over the next several months.
The new computer and technology center will officially open at 4:15 pm. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to introduce the center and launch the after-school program. The ceremony will take place at the Somerville YMCA and will be hosted by Boston Celtics champion and WARM2Kids CEO, M.L. Carr.
The WARM2Kids Learning Center Program is a national effort to provide state-of-the-art computers as well as a self-sustaining social and emotional development program for youth through the WARM2Kids website, the WARM2Kids After-School Guidebook and merit-based contests. WARM2Kids (We’re All Role Models 2 Kids) offers resources tailored to engage youth in the process of positive role model behavior development.
Carr hopes to expand the WARM2Kids program so that millions of young people, parents and youth directors use the site to stay connected with each other. “We would like to let people know that no matter what they’ve been through, somebody has gone through it,” Carr has stated. “If they have anxiety, depression or got cut from the team – somebody has been through it, so why not connect people who have been through it to people who are experiencing it now?”
Learning Center sponsor, Jeffrey Goldshine, is a respected businessman and philanthropist in the Boston community and is the co-founder of Specialty Medical Services, LLC. His parents, Melvyn and Claire Goldshine were married for 56 years and were heavily involved in the community. Melvyn was most proud of his role in establishing “The Teen Scene” an afterschool recreation space for inner city youth, while Claire was an English teacher who specialized in multi-lingual and minority education.
Members of the Goldshine family will be on hand to celebrate the launch along with noted community leaders and friends. The center will be open to all Somerville YMCA members and participants. In addition to the WARM2Kids program, the facility will host group and individual activities including tutoring, employment and youth leadership programs.
