Despite looming economic concerns, ASBA has much to celebrate. ASBA, in collaboration with the Edward Lowe Foundation is set to commemorate the growth, innovation and success of 50 second stage companies who will be honored by ASBA, at the 3rd Annual Comerica Bank Arizona Companies to Watch ceremony on November 11, 2008. This highly recognized event accepts nominations for companies with intent and capacity in one of four areas: Employee or sales growth, entrepreneurial leadership, sustainable competitive advantage and business development and innovative successes. Five additional Spotlight Awards will be given on the evening of the event for displaying excellence in the categories of Company Culture, Customer Service, Change / Innovation, Community and Commerce.
Joan Koerber-Walker, ASBA CEO, described the attributes ASBA looked for in honorees, “Each nominee is a great example of a growing, vibrant company. They are enterprises that are moving our economy forward, creating jobs, innovating in their industries, and making a difference in their community. The judges had some real challenges this year selecting the final 50 awardees. Competition was fierce, which is why it was even more difficult to select just one company for each category. While politicians and economists have been talking about turning around the economy, these great companies are doing it, day-by-day and customer-by-customer”.
Examples of these companies include Caliente Construction in Mesa, which aims to have its entire project management staff certified in sustainable building practices by 2009, attributes 90% of projects to repeat business, and maintains a commitment to education by providing financial resources to employees. Caliente is on track to produce double digit revenue gains for the fourth straight year, despite the fact that owner Lorraine Bergman lost her husband, and co-owner of the company, Tom, to a terminal illness. Other honorees like Killer Shade, a commercial shade manufacturing company in Phoenix, and Cell Trust Corp in Scottsdale, a mobile device software development company, have also fostered unconventional company cultures and contributed technological innovations which have spurred revenue gains and job growth.
“When it comes to job creation in the United States, second-stagers are doing the heavy lifting, for they generate the largest portion of net new jobs. What’s more, second-stage companies are creating new technologies, products and services. Their innovations influence our lives in a number of ways, from increasing productivity, at work to improving our health”, Janet Napolitano, Governor of the State of Arizona commented in a statement about the honorees.
