RTS Life Science, a worldwide supplier of automated sample management and drug delivery testing systems, discusses a High Throughput Structural Biology Factory (HTSB Factory) developed for and operating successfully at Takeda San Diego, Inc. The groundbreaking HTSB Factory streamlines Takeda San Diego’s protein crystallography operation. Takeda San Diego Inc is Japan-based Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd’s global centre for excellence in structure-based drug discovery.
The innovative HTSB Factory utilizes an industrial robot to provide plate-handling services for multiple concurrent and independent liquid handling processes in a single platform, significantly reducing the capital investment by sharing the system resources common to each process. The system performs three processes: liquid handling for bulk pre-mixed (course screen) crystallization solutions, preparation of custom (fine screen) crystallization solutions and set up of sitting drop vapour diffusion protein crystallization solutions.
The high quality and reliability of the system means it is very economical, achieving high throughput and consistent results with minimal user input. In addition, the novel HTSB Factory allows for the production of commercial screens directly into crystal plates, removing the need for intermediate deep well plates. Supported by a brand new software program developed by RTS Life Science engineers, the HTSB Factory provides an elegant solution to a previously laborious business process.
After a competitive tendering process, Takeda San Diego Inc selected RTS Life Science due to the company’s experience and proven track record in delivering automated sample storage solutions.
