Phil Sharples & Steve Hayman, co-directors of JobPatch (jobpatch.com) explain, “Our innovative, locally based internet jobsite was established to address a problem that has been increasingly, and worryingly, getting worse of the last 5 years, finding the right staff!”

“Use of the Internet is rapidly becoming a more common task due to rapid advancement of technology and the power of globalisation. The Internet provides a virtual environment where consumers' demands and needs are matched easily via a few clicks of a button. Not only has the Internet achieved a more equitable trading environment for consumers, it also gives us the potential to communicate more effectively and efficiently.”

Steve and Phil feel that as more and more people gain ‘easy’ access to the internet (every large telecommunications company now offers cheap or free broadband as part of their service) the use of the world wide web is set to explode over the next 5 years and the majority of people seeking work will utilise the internet for this purpose.

In August 2006, research found that more than one in 50 web pages requested by employees while at work were either house hunting or job search websites, representing a significant drain on productivity. Those using the internet to find new or alternative employment from home has been found to be rising significantly year upon year.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has issued a report entitled UK Skills: Making the Grade based on a survey of over 300 employers. The report states that 55% of the employers surveyed are finding it more difficult to recruit skilled workers now compared to five years ago.

Phil Sharples said “These stats could prove to be even more worrying for local employers, as we have a lot of skilled and employed workers in the local counties and employers are therefore very keen to recruit local people where they have vacancies.”

Steve Hayman went on to state that “In a recent survey carried out on Human Resource Managers it was found that 38% expect the skills crisis to get worse over the next few years and 40% thought that companies will need to raise salaries to attract and retain the right employees’. It was also found that 39% of HR professionals expect their companies to invest in staff training this year.”

It could be food for thought that a quarter of human resources managers interviewed by research company IPSOS MORI said that workers from Eastern Europe will be the best source of foreign talent for UK companies as the skills crisis develops.

Migrant workers from Eastern Europe will be particularly important in the manufacturing sector, the survey of 200 managers revealed.

Phil said “UK companies should be urged to address the looming skills shortage and capitalise on the ageing workforce by changing their approach to how and where they advertise to recruit the 21st Century employee.”

Practical recruitment strategies that take advantage of the growing talent pool of older workers will be increasingly relevant to maintaining a competitive workforce.

Skills-based recruiting and e-recruitment technology (internet job sites) promote wide access to job roles, they offer an accessible and compliant approach to skills-based recruiting and recruitment advertising.

Three Counties Jobs Limited’s internet jobsite takes this one step further by focusing and targeting the local rather than national skills base. Both Phil & Steve hope that by providing a one-stop-shop for local employment opportunities the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire & Gloucestershire will have access to an employment service fit for the requirements of the 21st Century.
