Thomas H. Mug, a partner at the law firm of Gallop, Johnson & Neuman, has been selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® in the specialty of Tax Law. Mr. Mug concentrates his practice in areas of tax law, with emphasis on employee benefits and executive compensation; personal estate and financial planning; closely-held businesses; and family businesses.
He is one of the leading St. Louis attorneys specializing in the design, establishment and administration of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) and is a frequent speaker on the topic. He leads the firm's ESOP team, coordinating efforts of the firm's employee benefits, corporate, lending, labor and estate planning practices.
Mr. Mug often advises clients in design and maintenance of tax-qualified retirement plans including 401(k), profit sharing, 403(b) and defined benefit plans. He provides solutions in areas of non-qualified and incentive compensation programs for key employees. He also assists employers with fringe benefits and health plans, including cafeteria plans and COBRA compliance.
Mr. Mug works closely with individuals developing personal estate plans. This includes counseling clients as to estate planning techniques and options, tax planning, and preparation of documents to implement the estate plan, including wills, revocable trusts, life insurance trusts, and charitable instruments.
He advises owners of closely-held and family businesses on matters including business succession planning, compensation planning, shareholder (buy-sell) agreements, tax issues, and structuring ongoing transactions.
Mr. Mug is admitted to practice in Missouri and Massachusetts, and before numerous federal courts, including the United State Supreme Court and the United States Tax Court.
He earned an LL.M. in Taxation from Washington University School of Law; a J.D. degree from Boston College Law School; and an A.B. Magna Cum Laude from Boston College.
