Many renewable energy sector supporters have also praised the move stating that finally the government has recognised the need for a focused and direct approach to the issue. It comes in preparation for a report due to be released this week from the Climate Change Committee which will recommend that the UK will need to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050. The original estimate for reduction was 60 percent but these figures have now changed in order to have a significant impact on the effects of global warming.

The Renewable Energy Centre said that the decision to create a department entirely focussed on the issue was a positive one but one which had already come too late. It stated that the time for planning and procedure was over and that action must be taken in order for the UK to meet not only its targets for 2020 but those of 2050.

If the government agrees to the recommendations it will be the most aggressive and legally binding commitment by any European country to date and would place the UK in a strong position for renewable markets. The UK has one of the biggest potential resources in wind and wave power and investors need to be confident the government is behind the technology before committing to a project.

Richard Simmons Managing Director at The Renewable Energy Centre said “We are very pleased about the announcement and the Climate Change Committees report but we need to see action. We need to see the UK striding forward in the renewables industry, not only on a large scale but on an individual level too. With reports of regular electricity blackouts likely to start affecting households over the next few years it is important for everyone to take responsibility. Legislation and support from the government is paramount to achieving this.”

The Renewable Energy Centre said that Ed Miliband would need to be clear about the way forward and ensure that climate change stays at the forefront of government policy on a continued basis. The problems of climate change and energy, it said, would over the next 50 years become the most important factors for the continued stability of the UK.
