The scheduled Boxing Illustrated Middleweight Championship fight, set for October 11 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, has been rescheduled for November 14 in Fargo, ND.
The reason for this change is the Muhammad Ali Act, which prohibits states without Athletic Commissions from staging boxing matches unless they are sanctioned by a neighboring state that has an athletic commission. Complicating the matters was the fact that the Association of Athletic Commissions has stopped this practice of allowing states to use another's athletic commission because of liability issues. As a result, in reality impossible for a state without an athletic commission to legally host a boxing event. Besides South Dakota, other states affected are Alabama and Alaska.
The fight has been tentatively rescheduled for November 14 in Fargo, ND pending approval by the N Dakota Athletic Commission.
"To say we are disappointed is a great understatement," said promoter Tom Ficara. "We were looking forward to a great show at the Corn Palace, which is a fine venue. But, the law is the law, and we think that we will be welcomed in Fargo in November."
Middleweight Joey Gilbert is expected to remain the headliner, as he continues his quest for the Middleweight Championship that began when he was a college boxing superstar at the University of Reno and then a TV star in the reality show "The Contender".
Promoter Ficara is not abandoning the Corn Palace, however, as he is planning a boxing themed TV event there that does not involove the need for Athletc Commission licensing.
"We love the Corn Palace, and think we have a great show for them that will be enjoyed by the fans but not be an actual boxing match," continued Ficara. "Thus the event will not be needing an Athletic Commission's approval."
Both events will be telecast on TVS Boxing.Net, the 24 hour streaming IPTV based worldwide boxing channel.
