Perhaps one of the most important functions of any blues society today is helping to preserve the genre to ensure that it is passed on from one generation to the next. The Cascade Blues Association in partnership with Robbie Laws’ SixStringCentral School of Music has developed a program that is taught by professional blues musicians and teachers, offered to public and private school systems, community centers, institutions and local community events. The mission of Blues In The Schools is to help fill the gap created by budget reductions in arts and music in our schools while providing a fun, interactive and goal-oriented program. Classes consist of live performance examples by the youth performance bands and/or professional adult musicians along with oral narrations and photos woven throughout the session.
To help raise necessary funds to place these programs into the schools, the Cascade Blues Association will be presenting a special night of outstanding blues performance at The Melody Ballroom (615 SE Alder, Portland) on Friday, October 3rd. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students 18 years & younger (available at the door only).
Opening this night of music will be a group of our own Blues In The Schools All Stars, with ages ranging from 14 to 17, featuring guitarist Gunnar Roads, multi-instrumentalist Mac Potts, bassist Taylor Eaton and Sam Low on drums.
Also appearing on the bill will be one of America’s foremost blues educators, Michael “Hawkeye” Herman, a past winner of The Blues Foundation’s Keeping The Blues Alive Award for achievements in education. Hawkeye is a natural story-teller and superb guitarist.
Headlining the night, will be The Sean Carney Band, based out of Columbus, Ohio. They are one of the most in-demand blues acts around the world today. Winners of the 2007 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee over more than 100 other entrants, guitarist Sean Carney also received recognition with the Albert King Award for most promising guitarist at the event. Since then, the band has been playing to rave reviews at festivals and venues around the world.
Presenting Blues In The Schools is important because it is a part of America’s cultural legacy. Michael “Hawkeye” Herman states, “My mission is to let young folks know that the blues is an important aspect of American music history, influencing other styles of music in the past, right up to the present. Blues is the real deal, the story of human experience, and that will always hold a place in the hearts and minds of the people. I am trying to ensure, through educational programs and workshops that future generations are aware of their own rich musical heritage.”
