The 2008 European WiMAX Capacity Enhancement Technology Innovation of the Year Award is presented to Pallasium in recognition of its revolutionary Cross Sector Interference Cancellation (XSIC) technology that is capable of substantially improving the economics of WiMAX networks by enabling better utilisation of spectrum resources and network infrastructure. With this innovative technology, Pallasium has demonstrated the enhancement of WiMAX network capacity manifold by using aggressive reuse schemes.

“Wireless network operators are under pressure to enhance the capacity of their network in order to support the rising demand for reliable and high-speed connectivity. An increase in capacity implies more bandwidth availability and consequently, better quality of service (QoS). This directly translates into improved customer satisfaction and a higher return on investment (ROI) for the operator,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Achyuthanandan Sampath. “Pallasium's revolutionary XSIC technology is capable of significantly improving the capacity of WiMAX and other OFDMA networks without requiring additional investments for radios and antennas.”

With the help of sophisticated anti-jamming algorithms, originally used by the military, the technology completely eliminates any potential interference. In this way, XSIC is capable of improving the capacity of a standard WiMAX base station by more than three times its normal capability.

“The most striking aspect of Pallasium's innovative XSIC technology is its capability to provide significant capacity gains while eliminating the need for additional antennas and radios,” states Sampath. “This implies that the operators need not invest money in buying new infrastructure. The technology is completely software-based and facilitates capacity enhancements by using conventional sector antennas.”

The 3-fold capacity gain is achieved by enabling the operator to reuse the same spectrum by all sectors while the technology ensures that the co-channel interference is nullified in overlapping areas. Thus, XSIC represents a significant value addition to both the operator and the infrastructure vendor.

Another of XSIC's outstanding features is its ability to work over smart antennae techniques such as multiple input multiple output (MIMO). This capability enables the operator to obtain the benefits from both of the technologies and consequently, drastic capacity improvements.

“Pallasium's technology is perfectly suited for WiMAX's networks in all frequency bands and deployment scenarios and is extremely powerful in fixed urban applications and wireless networks functioning in the 700 MHz spectrum, in particular,” remarks Sampath. “Most importantly, XSIC is perfectly suitable for long term evolution.”

Currently, Pallasium is engaged in testing the XSIC technology in Israel. In the future, it plans to further improve the technology and penetrate the US market. With Pallasium's unique XSIC technology being extremely efficient in increasing the network capacity within the 700 MHz spectrum, it is poised to achieve a significant market share when it debuts in the US market.

“The capacity that can be gained by a given amount of spectrum and infrastructure is the determining factor of the revenues and profit that could be spawned by a wireless system,” concludes Sampath. “Pallasium's technology is, thus, award-worthy as it significantly improves the capacity of WiMAX and other OFDMA networks without requiring additional investments for radios and antennas.”

Frost & Sullivan's Technology Innovation Award is bestowed upon a company (or individual) that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture.
