Jet Man 'Fusionman' Yves Rossy Completes Solo Flight Across the Channel
NewswireToday - /newswire/ -
Dover, United Kingdom, 09/26/2008 - Yves “FusionMan” Rossy, the first man to fly under a single jet-powered wing, today completed first ever solo flight across the Channel from Calais, France to Dover, England at 1:19 local time.
Rossy developed and built a winged pack with aerodynamic rigid aeroplane-type carbon-fiber wings with a span of about 8 feet, and four small kerosene-burning jet engines (developed by the German Jet-Cat company) under the wings; these engines are a large version of a type designed for model aeroplanes. He can achieve true flight with it. He uses his body and a hand throttle to manoeuvre. Rossy says he has become "the first person to gain altitude and maintain a stable horizontal flight thanks to aerodynamic carbon foldable wings". The wings can fold and unfold (by one hinge at the midpoint of each wing) while flying.
His first successful trial was on 24 June 2004, near Geneva, Switzerland. Yves Rossi has made more than 30 motorized flights since then. After being lifted by a Pilatus Porter plane, he jumps out of it with his wings folded, unfolds them as he falls, and flies horizontally for up to 6 minutes and 30 seconds, then lands using a parachute.
It was exhibited on 18 April 2008 at the opening day of the 35th Exhibition of Inventions at Geneva.
He wears a heat-resistant suit like a firefighter's or racing driver's, to protect him from the hot jet blast.
In November 2006 he flew with a later incarnation of his jetpack.
On May 14, 2008 he made a successful 6-minute flight from the town of Bex near Lake Geneva. He exited a Pilatus Porter at 7,500 feet with his jetpack. It was the first public demonstration before the world's press. He made effortless loops from one side of the Rhone valley to the other and rose 2,600 feet. Rossy, his sponsors, and the Swiss watch company Hublot, spent $285,000 to build the device. It has also been claimed that the military has been impressed and asked for prototypes for the powered wings, and that Rossy kindly refused the request and stated it is only for aviation enthusiasm purposes.
About Yves Rossy
Yves Rossy (born August 27, 1959) is a Swiss pilot, inventor and aviation enthusiast. He invented and is the first person to have flown a jet engine-powered wing strapped to his back. The flight occurred in November 2006 in Bex, lasting nearly six minutes. While work with jet packs to propel humans dates back as far as World War II, his is the first jetpack to also have wings.
Yves has served as a fighter pilot in the Swiss Air Force flying Dassault Mirage IIIs, Northrop F-5 Tiger IIs and Hawker Hunters. He flew Boeing 747s for Swissair and now works as an Airbus pilot for Swiss International Air Lines. (source Wikipedia®)
