The building society does not usually fund charities’ operating costs, but in the light of the current economic climate is making a special exception.
The contribution to the charity’s bursary scheme means that Relate Mid Thames & Buckinghamshire can continue to give relationship counselling to people in the local area who otherwise cannot afford it, including families, couples, singles and new parents. Relate typically charges a fee for these services, but never turns anyone away, regardless of their financial circumstances. Most clients will be able to make some contribution to costs, so in reality the building society’s donation will stretch much further than 20 sessions.
“We are thrilled to bits that Chesham Building Society is helping us,” said Fiona Paine, centre manager, Relate Mid Thames & Buckinghamshire. “It’s a huge amount of money for us and it really makes a big difference to the lives of adults, families and children with whom we work."
Paul Kilbride, chief executive of Chesham Building Society, said, “The credit crunch isn’t just putting a strain on people’s relationships; it’s also making it harder for people to afford help from trained and experienced counsellors. So when Relate approached us, we wanted to help."
Chesham Building Society encourages and supports projects, programmes and activities that strengthen the communities in which its employees and members live and work, and those that sustain and improve its local environment. It has recently supported Chesham High School, Bucks Garden Trust, the PACE Centre, Chiltern Citizens Advice Bureau, Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, the Hospice of St Francis and Florence Nightingale Hospice.
As a mutual organisation, Chesham Building Society's commitment to consumers is its priority. It has no external shareholders to pay, so it can use its profits to offer competitive interest rates to its members. This is the unique benefit that consumers get when they belong to a building society.
Because of its responsible lending policies, Chesham Building Society has one of the lowest mortgage arrears rates in the industry. It has branches in Chesham, Aylesbury and Little Chalfont, and provides funding and active support to charities and good causes in the local area.
Relate Mid Thames and Buckinghamshire is a charitable organisation that has been in operation locally since April 1949, which works to promote health, respect and justice in couple and family relationships. The local centre’s highly trained relationship experts provide over 6,000 hours of counselling each year – consultation with a counsellor, couple support, sexual therapy or family support.
