An iconic leader, Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla who holds several key positions on various regulatory and professional boards is Chairman of the US$ 28 billion Aditya Birla Group which is India’s first truly multinational corporation.
Mr Birla has served as the chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India’s Committee on Corporate Governance, and as chairman of SEBI’s committee on insider trading. He is on the National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII); the Apex Advisory Council of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, New Delhi and the Advisory Council for the Centre for Corporate Governance.
He authored the nation’s first report on corporate governance. Apart from serving on the Prime Minister of India’s Adviosry Council on Trade and Industry, the various other positions which he holds include, Director of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India, Chairman of the Staff Sub-Committee of the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India, Chairman of the Board of Trade constituted by the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Chairman of the Ministry of Company Affairs’ Advisory Committee.
He is the recipient of several awards which include in the yaer 2007 Asia Pacific Global HR Excellence – Exemplary Leader Award, NDTV’s “Global Indian Leader of the year”, “Most Socially Responsible Leader” by Outlook Business Magazine. In 2006 he was conferred the Lakshmipat Singhania – IIM, Lucknow National Leadership’s Business Leader Award. Mr. Birla also has been named the World Economic Forum’s “Young Global Leader“, “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year, the Economic Times – “Business Leader of the year”, Business India’s “Business Man of the year”, Business Today’s “Young Super Performer in the CEO Category”, NITIE’s “Business Visionary”, and the Bombay Management Association’s “Management Man of the year”.
Recently, Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla was honored with the 'Prof. Ravi. J. Mathai Award' for being an elite contributor to management education and one of the best entrepreneurs in the country by the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS).
A chartered accountant, Mr. Birla earned an MBA from the London Business School, where he is also an Honorary Fellow. He also holds Honorary Doctorate degrees conferred by various Indian universities. To salute his entrepreneurial excellence and exemplary contribution to Indian business, the All India Management Association conferred its Honorary Fellowship on him. Likewise, the National HRD Network named him “Outstanding Business Man of the year”.
On the academic front, Mr. Birla is on the Asian Regional Advisory Board of the London Business School, the G.D. Birla Medical Research and Education Foundation, and BITS-Pilani. He has been inducted on the Economic Times Corporate Advisory Board. Born in 1967, the 41 year old Kumar Mangalam Birla is undoubtedly one of the youngest Chancellors of universities in India today.
Well known in the Indian media fraternity for setting new benchmark in the horizon of Indian media, Ms. Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director of India’s leading print media company HT Media Ltd., is publisher of India today’s top ranking English daily, Hindustan Times and Hindi daily, Hindustan.
She has been a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Chairperson of the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Deputy Chairperson of the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), and is a member of the National Institute of Fashion Design, the National Institute of Design (NID), Indian Newspaper Society and Commonwealth Press Union London. She is also a Member, Board of Directors of Hero Honda Limited, Apex Committee of Commonwealth Games-2010, and Governing Council of India Habitat Centre.
As one of India’s leading and influential lady executives, Ms. Bhartia has won numerous accolades. She is the recipient of India’s most respected award – the Padma Shri. She was named the Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in 1996. She was awarded the ICDO National Award Development by the International Cultural Organisation in 1989.
She was also awarded the Mahila Shiromani Award in 1990 and the Vijaya Shree Award in 1991. She was honoured with the National Press India Award in 1992 and the National Unity Award in 1993. Her media initiatives such as Mint, a business daily launched in collaboration with the Wall Street Journal, FM Channel Fever 104 partnering with Virgin radio and daily tabloid Metro Now as joint venture with Times of India have been making waves all over.
Born in 1957, She is an alumnus of Calcutta University and takes credit for spear heading Hindustan Times right on top of web popularity of Indian Newspapers.
With effect from September 14, 2008, Kumar Mangalam Birla is the Chancellor and Smt Shobana Bhartia is the Pro-Chancellor of BITS Pilani. and there is no doubt that for BITS Pilani there are no dreams too large, no innovation unimaginable and no frontiers beyond reach.
