The ARISE Foundation for Life Skills Curricula and Staff Training and Curricula took part in the Rotary Club of Key Bicayne’s Foundation Grants Ceremony at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club on August 22. During the ceremony, ARISE received a grant to purchase video equipment to assist in its training programs.

For over 20 years, ARISE has provided valuable life skills training and materials to the Juvenile Justice System, schools, charities and other organizations that care for at-risk youth and teens. The new video equipment will allow ARISE Life Skills Instructors to review training sessions and make improvements. In the future, the training sessions may become streaming video or downloadable clips on the ARISE website.

The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne awarded $22,700 in grants to various nonprofit organizations this year. The club raises the funds through its annual Arts Festival. Robert Brookes, a longtime member of the club, admits that organizing the Arts Festival and funding grants are challenging, but the payoff is well worth the effort.

“It feels sweet to be able to touch some lives here with the small amount we can distribute in these hard economic times,” Brookes said.

The ARISE Foundation was founded in 1986 by Susan and Edmund Benson. The highly-acclaimed ARISE workshops teach those that work with at-risk youth how to impart life skills to the children and teens under their care. Just a few of the life skills taught by ARISE certified instructors include: anger and stress management, AIDS awareness, interviewing and networking, drug abuse prevention and health and hygiene. The ARISE lessons work because they inspire conversation, involvement and creativity. The ARISE life skills lessons are not sequential. Each stands on its own, making them ideal for transient populations. Everyone starts fresh with each new learning experience.
