Industrial Vision Components has partnered with SensoPart, Inc. offer the FT 50 C-S1 color sensor. The FT 50 C-S1 provides an advanced, easy to implement automation solution to IVC customers that need to verify proper color or monitor and control color variations in their manufacturing processes. In addition to its advanced color sensing capability, the FT 50 C-S1 provides a fully integrated RS485 interface and additional functions that make it even more versatile than the original Sensor Innovation Prize winning FT 50 C, which is also available from IVC.
The new FT50 C-S1 is able to internally manage five reference colors, which can be both taught-in and scanned. Color selection and greyscale selection are now separately controlled, making the sensor more flexible and better able to adapted to specific applications. But the most important improvement is definitely the integrated RS485 interface, a feature that enables a unique versatility that color sensors previously could not offer. Three different versions of FT50 C-S1 are available:
Color on request: The new FT50 C-S1 can store an unlimited number of reference colors in the control system and reloads them when required. In this mode of operation, the required reference colors are first taught and then transferred to the primary control in the form of color vectors (reference value and tolerances). Before the process is started, the primary control selects the relevant reference color and transmits it back to the sensor. The sensor compares the reference with the measured color value and outputs the signal “Match” or “No Match” via the switching output. The response time for the recognition of colors is minimal, furthermore there is no time needed for a repeated teach-in of new colors. “In our opinion, this configuration will be the main future application of the FT50 C.”, says Jörg Faller, Head of Product Management Sensors from SensoPart. “Thus we are able to achieve a flexibility and process speed like no other color sensor on the market.”
Output of the color channel: FT50 C-S1outputs the color value or the channel number of the detected reference color. Thus up to five differently colored objects can be distinguished. The control system is not needed for evaluation, because the recognition of colors is effected by the sensor. In this mode of operation, five different objects can be sorted by color.
Output of the color value: The FT50 C-S1 outputs the color value of the measured object via the RS485 interface. This is the standard mode of operation of most color sensors with analogue interface on the market; its disadvantage is that the comparison with the taught reference must be made by the primary control, resulting in a slowed-down process speed. Its advantage is that in principle the number of colors has no upper limit.
Patented and award-winning, the FT 50 C-S1 not only impresses with its versatility, but also with its technical features. These are the same as those of its award-winning predecessor which is still available. The sensor operates with pulsed white light, enabling a reliable recognition of colors also when scanning distances are variable and even in through-beam mode. Thanks to a special patented lens – the so-called optical funnel – the sensor also offers a unique depth of field, enabling it to detect even moving and vibrating objects in a reliable way.
Configuration and teach-in can be done very easily directly at the sensor or by means of the RS485-interface. With the visible homogeneous light spot, alignment to the target color surfaces is no problem. The FT 50 C is available with three different light spot sizes (diameter about 4 mm, square 2 x 2 mm or rectangular 5 x 1 mm) and therefore particularly versatile.
