StudyAbroad.com, a resource of EducationDynamics, asked more than 1,000 potential study abroad students if they have changed the destination in which they plan to study abroad because of the weak dollar. While 43 percent of respondents said they have changed their intended destination, 57 percent had no intention of altering their plans (34 percent are still going to study in their desired destination despite the value of the dollar, and 23 percent answered that their desired destination isn’t affected by the value of the dollar).

“What we’ve found is that more than half of poll respondents are unaffected by the weak dollar,” says Josh Irons, product manager and producer of StudyAbroad.com. “Some are planning to study in a country where the value of the dollar isn’t an issue, but others are simply choosing to study in their ideal location anyway.”

Irons believes this is because the students currently interested in studying abroad have the economic means to do so, regardless of the weak dollar.

“At the moment, those who study abroad make up a small portion of the college student population. It’s important to increase the number of students on college campuses who want to study abroad, and when interest in student travel does increase, that’s when we’ll see a shift away from the current popular destinations.”

Students looking to find their ideal study abroad program can visit StudyAbroad.com, a free directory of more than 18,000 study abroad programs in more than 140 countries.
