Tim Donnelly of Special-T Signs & Graphics, an industry leader in customized signs and specialty graphics, has paired up with Terry Buzzard of Island Mariner Cruises on a one-of-a-kind project.
Island Mariner recently became the first whale watching company in the industry to acquire its own spotter plane. Wanting a unique look for the plane, Buzzard contacted artist and sign painter Larry Oliverson. Oliverson directed Buzzard to Special-T Signs & Graphics.
Using Oliverson’s graphics, Special-T used their state of the art computerized sign making equipment to create adhesive images of remarkable quality. And they were able to do so virtually overnight.
Because Northwest Coast Native American culture is part of what passengers learn about during their whale watching experience, the images are all Northwest Coast designs. They include eagles on both the top and bottom of the wings, a whale and salmon on the fuselage, as well as representations of red snapper, raven, thunderbird, dogfish, loon and seal on the plane’s floats.
“The plane lets us find whales more often and more efficiently than any other whale watching boat out there,” says Buzzard. “But, thanks to Special-T, it’s also become a great part of the show. It’s amazing, but whenever the plane flies by, more people take pictures of it than they take when we’re watching the whales.”
“In our nearly 30 years as a family-owned business we’ve undertaken literally thousands of projects,” said Donnelly. “But this was definitely one of the best. There isn’t another airplane like this in the world.”
