New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (industrialautomation.frost.com), South African Automation and Control Solutions Market in the Pulp and Paper Industry, finds that the market earned revenues of $22.1 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $41.6 million in 2014.
"The need to improve the efficiency of existing processes, especially raw material use, is driving this demand," notes Frost & Sullivan research analyst James Fungai Maposa. "These solutions allow the effective use of raw materials, including fibre and energy."
The market for the traditionally preferred distributed control systems (DCS) is growing more slowly than those for other ACS products. This is an indication of the sub-sector's maturity. Despite this, it will continue to generate income through retrofitting due to its large installed base.
A large number of pulp and paper manufacturers in South Africa are focusing on cost cutting by reducing both the number of vendors and the diverse control systems in their plants. This has warranted a growth in the supply of integrated solutions, rather than stand-alone solutions, by suppliers. Smaller supplier companies will therefore be forced to form strategic alliances between themselves or with bigger participants to meet end users' requirements.
Most pulp and paper mills in South Africa are semi-automated, due to the high cost of automation and a lack of suitable skills to run ACS operations. Most end users also argue that full automation could contribute to unemployment, leaving jobs only for trained personnel.
"A majority of end users also believe that ACS systems are extremely costly," adds Maposa. "The ROI on these products is difficult to observe in the short term and gaining approval for new installations and system upgrades can be tricky."
