Point-of-Care Connectivity Gaining Increasing Importance in Europe

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - London, United Kingdom, 07/21/2008 - European Point-of-Care (POC) Connectivity Markets, finds that market had an installed base of 979 hospitals in 2007 and can expect moderate growth over the next five to seven years.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (drugdiscovery.frost.com), European Point-of-Care Connectivity Markets, finds that market had an installed base of 979 hospitals in 2007 and can expect moderate growth over the next five to seven years.

"As the number of de-centralised tests is growing, there is a need for efficient operational and quality management of these tests," notes Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Arun A.K. "The increasing adoption of electronic medical records (EMRs) encourages the uptake of DM solutions, as they help overcome challenges such as manual data-transcription errors and workflow problems."

Hospitals have to interconnect POC instruments to a centralised electronic network to manage test performances and their results. As connectivity improves, compliance issues related to operator ID errors, patient ID errors and non-validated operators will decrease. Enhanced connectivity will streamline workflows and yield substantial savings in time. These factors will motivate the adoption of connectivity solutions.

The sluggish adoption of POCT1-A standards by vendors and the limited product choice available for end users are, however, limiting the uptake of connectivity solutions in the market.

"As hospitals are increasingly choosing open connectivity solutions, the options currently available for them in the market are extremely limited," explains Arun. "POC vendors are reluctant to adopt POCT1-A standards in their existing platforms, creating a real challenge for sustained market expansion."

To boost market prospects, POC vendors should embrace POCT1-A standards and more actively adhere to them in current and future products.
