Hudson, OH, United States, 07/18/2008 - In honor of Beijing Summer Olympics, active retirement community in Northeast Ohio will host its own week of competitive games for seniors, with opening keynote address by world champion senior athlete Ed Bixenstine, age 82.

The spirit of friendly competition will soon overtake Laurel Lake Retirement Community as the active lifestyle community prepares to host its own "Olympics Week" in honor of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Laurel Lake Retirement Community will kick off Olympics Week on Thursday, August 7 at 3 pm with a keynote address by V. E. "Ed" Bixenstine.
Bixenstine, 82, of Kent, is a novelist and poet, a three-time Duathlon World Champion, handball enthusiast, teacher, cook, community activist and devoted husband, father and grandpa.
The retired Kent State University professor of psychology will defend his World Duatholon Championship on September 28, 2008 in Rimini, Italy. The combination foot race and biking competition exceeds distances of 34 miles.
Olympics Week at Laurel Lake continue on Friday August 8, the day the international games begin, with Laurel Lake's own Parade of Nations at 3:30 pm and a Torch Lighting Ceremony at 4 pm.
Throughout Olympics Week (August 11 to 15), seniors living at Laurel Lake will compete in eight "sanctioned" medal events, including a Cornhole tournament, Wii bowling, batting competition, one-mile speedwalking relay, foul shot competition, golf putting and chipping challenge, mental gymnastics, and an innertube relay in the Laurel Lake swimming pool.
Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded at closing ceremonies on Wednesday, August 20.
