The National Conference on Design for Product Life Cycle - DPLC 2006 organized by the Mechanical Engineering Group of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani (Rajasthan) was inaugurated on 17 February 2006 at Pilani by Dr B Gurumoorthy Chairman & Professor, Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing 'CPDM", Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof Gurumoorthy also highlighted the challenges of curriculum for design education and research.
The theme of the conference was presented by Dr Regalla Srinivasa Prakash of BITS Pilani. The Pro Vice Chancellor and Director of BITS Pilani Dr L K Maheshwari emphasized on the interrelationship between design and manufacturing excellence and pointed out that by improving the physical design during the product life cycle, one can reduce costs, improve manufacturing yields and extend the life of the product as new technology is introduced.
