Each year, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce awards small, medium, large and not-for-profit businesses in a variety of different categories. Dadnab is nominated for the “Take On Traffic” award in the small- and medium-sized business category.
Dadnab operates a service that enables riders of public transportation to plan their trips using text messaging from their mobile phones. Dadnab’s founder, Roger L. Cauvin, created the service to make it easier to get around town without a car.
“Riding the bus can be an intimidating experience, especially when you can’t conveniently and spontaneously determine the best way to get to your destination. Dadnab eliminates this barrier to greater adoption of public transportation,” Cauvin says.
An Austin Dadnab user sends a text message (SMS) to austin[.]dadnab.com with an origin, destination, and optional departure or arrival time. Dadnab replies with an itinerary that tells the user what bus to take, at which location, and what time.
“High gas prices are causing an increasing number of car owners to get on buses and trains. However, to make sustainable progress in the competition against the personal automobile, public transportation has to be viewed as a convenient alternative,” Cauvin continues.
Though the company is based in Austin, the service is also available in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Portland, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area.
The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce will announce winners at an awards banquet August 27, 2008 at the Hilton Hotel.
