Mark Rushton and Jon Harnish had planned to meet at Jon's Weather Excuse recording studio in the New Bohemia part of Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, June 11th, in order to work on some new ambient and electronic-oriented music.
Instead, Harnish was busy that day, removing what he could from his home and studio while a mandatory flood evacuation for areas along the Cedar River was issued.
Two days later, Harnish's house was inundated by 10 feet of water. Gone were countless books, photos, CDs, and other items piled high on tables and shelves in the hope that water would only rise a couple feet into his house.
Despite all this, Harnish plans to play with Rushton in a live setting at the Iowa City Yacht Club on Sunday, July 6th, opening for Eric Hall and Pacific Before Tiger. The show starts at 9pm. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Eric Hall is a sound artist from St. Louis, MO, formerly of the St. Louis group, Grandpa's Ghost. Hall's music explores the idea of "musical cubism" using several samplers used to shift sound in time. He is also known for creating sound installations for the St. Louis Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, among others.
Pacific Before Tiger is the electro-acoustic project of Greensboro, North Carolina based composer, Andrew Weathers. He makes delicate soundscapes, in the vein of Christian Fennesz or Tim Hecker, using electronically processed guitar.
Mark Rushton and Jon Harnish released a self-titled album in February 2008, and is currently available on all major digitial distributors worldwide, like iTunes, AmazonMP3, Napster, Rhapsody, and CDBaby. Rushton also has four solo albums. He has sold albums in such places as Australia, South Africa, Japan, France, England, South America, Canada, and throughout the United States.
Rushton has been making some of his music available to fans worldwide, for free, in the form of regular podcasts since 2004. Eric Hall and Pacific Before Tiger all have MySpace sites where fans and audience members can get a preview.
Rushton and Harnish are both readying four new live albums, to be released sporadically through the end of 2008. These will be edited live recordings they’ve created in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids from 2005 until their final recording session at Weather Excuse on March 8, 2008. They are also planning a live performance in the New Bohemia section of Cedar Rapids in the coming weeks.
