The campaign will encourage community members to register with the National Bone Marrow Registry. This year’s activities will include public service announcements, community events and a music festival and will culminate in the annual Angels of Hope Awards.
This year’s music festival will take place on July 12 at the Hollywood Park racetrack. Renán Almendárez Coello, “El Cucuy de la Mañana,” will serve as emcee, and performers will include Ezequiel Peña, Yolanda Del Rio, Voces Del Rancho, Carmen Jara, Karyme Lozano and Tierra. Admission to the concert is free, and tickets are available at Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Superior Grocers and Ritmo Latino Music stores.
The Angels of Hope Awards will take place immediately after the concert; the awards honor Latino professionals and community leaders who have made significant contributions in their careers and inspirational individuals who have overcome cancer. Red-carpet arrivals will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony at 7:30 pm in Hollywood Park’s Gold Cup Room.
Last year’s ceremony brought together bone marrow donation recipient Gus Perez and his bone marrow donor Jesus Soto for the very first time. Jesus Soto was the first individual to receive The Drop of Life award. The reunion demonstrated the impact that the National Bone Marrow Registry has made on the lives of thousands of recipients and their donors.
On any given day, more than 6,000 men, women and children search the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry for a life-saving donor. For many of these patients, a transplant may be the best and only hope of a cure. Each year Only 2,500 will find a match and receive a bone marrow transplant; of those, approximately 180 are Hispanics — a very small number is due to the probability of finding a match within the 7 percent in the registry that is composed of Hispanics. Because tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone from their own race or ethnicity. By joining the NMDP Registry, everyone will help more patients of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to find matching donors.
Participating sponsors include Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Superior, Ritmo Latino, La Raza 97.9, Unilever, Gamesa, Pepsi Bottling Group, Frito Lay, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Kraft and Bimbo Bakeries.
