Founded by Debra Harrison, Harrison Consulting Services based in Channel Islands Beach, CA is celebrating 10 years in business.
Specializing in the worldwide development of food processing quality systems and inspection of field operations and food production facilities, its mission is to assist growers and processors of agricultural and processed foods in meeting the ever-changing food safety requirements expected by consumers throughout the world.
Harrison, owner and chief consultant, has more than 20 years of experience in food science. Earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Fermentation Science from the University of California Davis, her expanded expertise includes the implementation and monitoring of food safety programs in the processed food industry in Ventura County, throughout the United States, Mexico, Latin and South America, and Canada.
She is a Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), Certified HACCP Auditor (CHA), seasonal Quality Control Manager in the Fruit Processing Industry and Technical Writer and serves as a liaison between U.S. and international companies to develop programs for clients.
A firm believer in establishing strong quality processing systems, Harrison helps companies write and develop food safety programs that employ standard operating procedures to keep food products safe. She also assists in the implementation of training and evaluation procedures. “Many growers and processors find written programs required by industry guidelines and customer requirements overwhelming to try and set up on their own,” Harrison says. “We specialize in working with the growers and processors to set up systems that will be easy to use while meeting the customer and industry expectations.”
Preparation and monitoring of a successful quality system for future growth is key, Harrison says. “We help prepare growers and processing plants for third-party audits and can assist in the design of Sustainable Agriculture programs. Development of a managed portfolio in the format of required documents, simple procedure outlines, detailed monitoring sheets, on-site quality management and detailed training are all part of the services offered.
Following guidelines set forth by government and industry, Harrison serves as a liaison between U.S. and international companies to develop programs for clients. Business takes Harrison all over the world, from Latin and South America to Europe, Mexico and North America, including our own Ventura County – a hotbed of agriculture for products shipped around the globe.
In addition, the firm also provides assistance with ingredient purchases, supplier/vendor evaluations, employee training, third party audit preparation, HACCP plan development, seasonal on-site quality assurance management and product development.
