Hansen Thiam Sun creates paintings that bridge the gap between abstraction and naturalism. His works show a penchant for figurative tendencies, even as he takes innovative approaches to the abstract and conceptual. By blending together disparate movements, genres, and mediums, Hansen collapses false dichotomies and gives rise to truly unique works of self-expression. Working deftly to incorporate spontaneous movement into technically orthodox compositions, Hansen gives visual representation to the merging of Eastern and Western artistic practices. He has developed a unique style that is "a mixture of semi-abstract and minimalist art, by this mixture he brings the abstract into the Contemporary Abstraction" according to Aminudin TH. Siregar. Hansen's technical range includes acrylic painting, oil painting and mixed media painting. His style allows for a rare dialogue as minimalist plates of color give way to calligraphic improvisations.
Not only has he pioneered the integration and cross-pollination of disparate art movement within his works, but he has been among the first to exhibit these movements in Indonesia. Hansen has exhibited his paintings across the world, in galleries in Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, USA, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brazil, China and Taiwan.
