First-time author Margarete Hurn was recently nominated for the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the “Travel” category for her book "The Foreigner's Guide to Living in Slovakia". The awards, organized by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group, were established to recognize and honor the most exceptional independently published books.
“The Foreigner’s Guide to Living in Slovakia” was published by Modra Publishing and released in August of 2007. The 216 page trade paperback contains an overview of what defines Slovakia, how history is interwoven with the present day, and topics a person might find unfamiliar or confusing, such as how to read a Slovak public transportation schedule. Other chapters include relocating to Slovakia, and which laws a foreigner is likely to need to understand. Finally, folk tradition and culture is described along with major holidays, Slovak foods, and social and business customs.
The inspiration for the book came from Hurn’s personal experiences in acclimating to life in Slovakia as a foreigner. “Moving to Slovakia on my own was difficult at times because there were many cultural elements I had never experienced or didn’t understand”, Hurn stated. “Once I began to figure out the practicalities of day-to-day living in my adopted country, I realized I had valuable information that could be passed on to other foreigners coming to Slovakia.”
Hurn, who lived and worked in Slovakia for five years, believes as the Slovak economy continues to grow in strength, the country will become an increasingly important destination for visitors coming on business as well as for tourism. Currently, Slovakia’s economy continues to be one of the most productive in the EU.
Margarete Hurn, born and raised in southern California, has been writing articles about Slovakia for Internet consumption for six years and currently hosts her own blog, “Slovakia for Foreigners” on her website. The Foreigner’s Guide to Living in Slovakia” is her first book and the nomination from the Indie Book Awards confirms that she has the ability to write and present material on Slovakia that is relevant and of value.
