The rising tide of new rights for employees in recent years has had significant implications for business owners, directors and senior management. The rules are same for businesses large or small so the local firm without an HR department or dedicated staff to look after employment law or health & safety matters can easily trip up in the red tape.
Keeping ahead of the law isn’t always easy if you run a small or medium sized company. After all employment law and health & safety legislation is geared towards protecting the employee so does not always pay regard to the administrative wake it leaves behind.
Carvel Insurance Brokers based near Oundle have witnessed even surprisingly large firms unwittingly falling on the wrong side of the law. Colin Davies, Managing Director of Carvel who provides commercial risk advice and insurance services commented “We see all too often gaps knowledge in the area of Employment Law and Health & Safety. It can be something as simple as not having done a Fire Risk Assessment at a business premises or as complex as not being up to date with the employee rights of European migrant workers. At Carvel we ensure that adequate business insurance cover is provided but can only do this if everything is up to date in terms of minimum legal requirements”.
Local companies and entrepreneurs want to focus on the success, growth and development of their businesses rather than worrying how they might go about dealing with a difficult employee or what they should do when facing a Tribunal claim. The difficulty for most employers is: Firstly knowing all the laws that exist and secondly implementing the necessary changes. It is for this reason that Carvel has arranged a free half day seminar with Peninsula Business Services, its preferred Employment Law and Health & Safety consultancy. The morning briefing will take place in July to help local businesses understand their obligations.
The complimentary seminar at the Butterfly Hotel on 17th July is open to all senior managers and local business owners. In a lively two hour session the aim is to provide an understanding of the common pitfalls and important areas of legislation including: New holiday entitlements, statutory dispute resolution procedures, risk assessments, contracts of employment, maternity changes, delegation of safety responsibilities. The briefing is planned to highlight the many obligations faced by today’s Business Owner/Manager and time will be spent demonstrating how employers can protect against costly litigation claims and tribunals.
