Benefits to utilities include increased productivity and safety for line crews by providing instant transformer status information. It is expected the IFD sensor will be the defacto standard for distribution transformers as a simple, low-cost mechanical information tool for line crews. Co-developed with many electric power utilities, this high value, low-cost, reliable fault sensor is used in oil-filled distribution transformers. The product function will continue to evolve as utilities request cost effective solutions under the umbrella of distribution automation.

“Utilities constantly ask about an internal fault detector for pad-mount transformers”, says Paul Chisholm, President & CEO of IFD Corporation. “With this release, we are making the first step in our line of pad-mount technology solutions.”

“We are very pleased with the installation process of these units at a number of transformer manufacture sites thus far,” says Daniel Desrosiers, VP Engineering and CTO, “and we will work with more manufacturers of the bolted-lid type pad-mount transformers in the coming months.”

The IFD for bolted lid transformers operates in areas with higher fault current levels (> 1000 amps) and will perform very well in dry vault transformers. The customer business case is expected to be even better than pole-top applications of the IFD which are 10% - 58% return on investment.

About the Internal Fault Detector (IFD)

The IFD is a purely mechanical sensor with a specialized membrane that responds to rapid pressure changes that are specific to internal faults. When the membrane moves in response to the rapid pressure rise, it releases a spring-loaded, readily visible indicator. The IFD also adds value with its’ integrated pressure relief device (PRD) that operates like a standard PRD.
