Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has added a new report showing that Sweden has one of the highest broadband penetration rates in Europe, the result of an effective government broadband policy and a population quick to adopt emerging technologies.

“2006-2007 Europe - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Scandinavia” reports that considerable investment in fast mobile networks has also made mobile broadband a realistic proposition. The share of dial-up revenue fell from 72% in 2001 to 9% in 2006, and in 2007 TeliaSonera stopped providing dial-up for new subscribers.

Authors of the report say most of Sweden's 289 municipalities operate their own networks, all of which will be interconnected with fibre by 2010. They further note that Sweden is one of the world's leading countries for fibre deployment, largely due to the population density in a small geographical area. More than 50% of the country's workforce lives within the three main cities, many in apartment buildings. TeliaSonera in early 2007 committed itself to building a 100Mb/s fibre service to Sweden's 15 largest cities.

The report profiles five of the leading countries in Europe in the use and development of telecommunications services. Effective regulatory control has provided strong competition in all sectors, while companies such as Telenor are among the top performers internationally.

It further shows that Scandinavia has successfully deployed new mobile technologies, while it has also retained its lead in rolling out high-speed broadband networks, with a strong emphasis on municipal fibre deployments. The wide availability of digital TV anticipates one of the earliest switchovers to the digital format in Europe.

This report presents a concise overview of sector liberalisation and privatisation in Scandinavia, the development of product offerings for both mobile and broadband technologies, essential operator statistics in all telecom sectors, and the emergence of convergence and triple play.

“2006-2007 Europe - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Scandinavia” is available from Report Buyer. For more information, see website.
