Grewal Eye Institute (GEI), Chandigarh and world's fourth JCI accredited Eye Hospital, crossed another milestone in providing complete eye care by now offering Oculoplastic services, the Plastic Surgery for the Eye, to city residents.
To create awareness on the significance of Oculoplastics in Ophthalmology, and as a part of the Continuous Medical Education (CME) programme of GEI, a seminar on Oculoplastics was also conducted today from 9 am to 5 pm at institute premises.
The day long seminar featured highly experienced ophthalmologist speakers, including home speakers Dr Grewal & Dr Mittal, Dr Santosh Honavar & Dr Milind Naik, both from LV Prasad Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, Dr E Ravindra Mohan from Shankar Netralaya, Chennai and Dr Usha Singh from PGI, Chandigarh etc. The panel not only highlighted important topics related to lids, lacrimal system, ocular & orbital tumors and socket, but also touched upon cosmetic & aesthetic aspects of Ophthalmology.
Speaking on the newly introduced Ocuplastic services Dr. SPS Grewal, CEO, GEI, said, "At GEI, we have always made an earnest effort to provide latest and most comprehensive facilities in Ophthalmology. Oculoplastics has evolved as an important sub-specialty in the field of ophthalmology. Newer advances and innovations have made a conspicuous change in the outlook towards Oculoplastics. The advent of cosmetic and aesthetic aspects has further added to this already important service. Besides the introduction, we are looking forward to the seminar on Sunday. The seminar will be highly informative on the rising impact of Oculoplastics in Ophthalmology. We have selected such topics for the seminar that would be of interest to not only ophthalmologists, but to dermatologists and plastic surgeons as well. Also, I take this opportunity to welcome Dr Raman Mittal to the GEI family. Dr Mittal is a highly experienced surgeon in ophthalmic plastic surgery, orbital diseases and ocular oncology. With his presence, we will now be able to extend these services in this part of the country."
Oculoplastics is a highly significant subject in eye care. A patient may complain of watering or discharge from eyes, which could be due to abnormality in tear drainage system; or an abnormal swelling on eyelids which could be a cancerous tumor; many such conditions can be promptly diagnosed and correctly treated under Oculoplastics. And of course, Oculoplastics also has cosmetic applications like treatment of disfigured or abnormal eyelids, wrinkles around the eyes etc.
A number of eye diseases require a trained eye plastic surgeon. An abnormality in the drainage system of tears can affect any age group right from the early childhood to old age. This will lead to constant watering and even discharge from eyes. A special surgical procedure 'Dacryocystorhionstomy', can be conducted in such cases by an Oculoplastic surgeon to form new passage for tears.
Also, cancer not only affects other body parts but may also affect eyes. An abnormal swelling or growth on eyelids, or outward bulging of eye balls can be the result of a tumor. These eyelid or orbital tumors need to be properly managed by an Oculoplastic surgeon to salvage the eye and vision.
Another form of cancer in the eye can be a cancerous tumor of the eye ball. This condition is called 'Retinoblastoma' and is generally seen in very young children. Timely & proper management of a 'Retinoblastoma' patient by a trained Oculoplastic surgeon can not only save the vision but also the life of such a child.
Also, there are numerous cosmetic applications of Oculoplastics. Abnormal or disfigured eyelids, due to injuries, or drooping of the upper eyelids called 'Ptosis', can be properly corrected and repaired by an ophthalmic plastic surgeon. Besides this, Botulinum Toxin Injections, under the supervision of a trained Oculoplastic surgeon, can relieve wrinkles on the face or around the eyes and help maintain younger looks. Filler Injections can also being given to rejuvenate the face and periocular areas.
