In the United States alone 16 power plants are scheduled to opened by 2010. The construction and increase of generation capacity of plants should increase installation of new compressors.

“Power cost is the largest single component in the operating cost of an air compressor,” says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Kishan Bhat. “Over the life of the machine, the power cost will be a large multiple of the initial cost of the compressor itself. Consequently, more efficient compressors can pay dividends in power savings over their lifetimes, even though their initial installed cost may be higher.”

In a majority of situations, industry practice suggests that compressed air demand is characterized by significant fluctuations. Therefore in periods of low demand, unused compressed air represents lost energy. Manufacturers have introduced energy saving compressors such as the variable speed drive (VSD) compressor to overcome this particular situation.

A VSD compressor is able to closely follow the fluctuating demand by varying the speed of its drive motor. The energy saving pays for the complete machine in about six months to three years of operation, depending upon the application.

The North American compressors manufacturers have been facing increasing pressure from end-users to supply better quality products. Some segments are witnessing unprecedented growth of ten to fifteen percent. This has put an enormous pressure on the suppliers of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as nobody expected such fast paced growth.
