Data Íslandia, an international provider of long-term risk-management and business services relative to archival data storage and the preservation of digital records and assets, today announced the immediate availability of the pioneering Data Íslandia data scooter. The scooter is a mobile storage platform based on Hitachi Data Systems’ Content Archive Platform and allows for the secure physical transfer of petabytes of data between locations. The easy-to-handle solution is available with three memory size options up to one petabyte.
The Data Scooter (datascooter.com) is a world-first, unique solution that provides a secure and very cost-effective means of quickly moving large volumes of data from numerous data centres to Data Íslandia’s 100%-green archival storage management facilities in Iceland. The facilities are powered completely by geothermal and hydroelectric energy, making Data Íslandia’s services the greenest in the world. The lower real estate and telecommunications costs in Iceland mean that Data Íslandia can pass these savings on to its customers as well.
Customers with multiple data centres can easily have 70% of their total data load, especially the rarely-accessed data load that is held for regulatory or policy purposes, transported to Data Íslandia’s carbon neutral facility in Iceland for archiving. The data is kept safe in transit and fully compliant with regulations and standards agreed with the customer. Only copied data is transported and original data is never deleted until the Data Scooter has successfully deposited its data load in Iceland and fidelity been verified by the customer. Information archived in Data Íslandia can be retrieved from archive in a few seconds, via advanced fibre optic undersea cables.
The Data Scooter is also a means of securely transferring specific project data to production facilities and between collaboration points to accelerate timetables and enhance workflow.
“This is a very simple solution to an old problem, but it really works,” explains Sol Squire, managing director, Data Íslandia. “Managing huge volumes of data is a complex challenge and archiving just can’t be done over a network. It would be like trying to fit a grapefruit down a garden hose. In the past IT departments were forced to rely on old servers and lots of bubble wrap to physically move their archived data – a risky and expensive process. Now we can offer a secure approach that leverages the best storage technology to ensure data integrity is maintained at 10% of the cost of transmitting it across MPLS networks.”
