In proclaiming April 19 "Michigan Dance Day", Gov. Granholm joins the many dancers and dance enthusiasts across the state in recognizing the importance of Dance in our communities. Organizers are committed to celebrating a day each year where Michigan’s great talent and love of dance, will be in the forefront.
To celebrate Michigan Dance Day this year the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet will be presenting the second annual Dance Michigan: Choreographers’ Showcase on April 19.
Dance Michigan began with the desire to feature dancers from throughout the state. This year participating groups will present works by both experienced and emerging choreographers with styles ranging from Ballet to Belly Dance.
Participating artists come from companies, colleges and studios from throughout Michigan. Groups participating include: Ann Arbor Civic Ballet; A Company of Dancers; IDT, an affiliate of the department of dance at Hope College; Lansing Chamber Dance; UM Dance Department and Unveiled Dance Company.
The showcase will take place on Saturday, April 19 at 6pm in the Saline High School Ellen Ewing Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $10, 5 and under are free and are available at the door or online.

Whereas, By observing Michigan Dance Day, dancers across Michigan will raise the public's awareness of the importance of the role of dance in American societal, cultural, and educational communities; and,
Whereas, Through performances throughout the state, dance exhibitions educate the public on the inherent benefits of dance in our society; and,
Whereas, Dancing is a great body conditioner and form of aerobic exercise; it tones the body while increasing flexibility and balance; and,
Whereas, Dancing serves as a stress reliever, and provides the ongoing challenge of learning while increasing self-confidence and pride; and,
Whereas, From the beginning of recorded history, dance has served as a meaningful venue for communication and continues to do so in modern day; and,
Whereas, Michigan Dance Day and its performances offer a fantastic opportunity to share with others the joy that comes from dancing and performing, and to stress the importance of the performing arts to schools and communities everywhere; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2008, as Dance Day in Michigan.
