The Half Street Ballpark Streetscape scheme in Southeast Washington incorporates shopping, dining, entertainment, and residential spaces in a streetscape progression leading to the new Nationals Stadium, adding a sense of occasion and excitement and introducing elements of a human scale to the stadium vicinity. Gensler's brand design team is leading the effort to weave together architectural elements, design, way-finding and other design disciplines to create a unique sense of place at the site.

"As we grow our DC practice, Gensler sees a compelling opportunity to become more involved in lifestyle projects in the area like the one for the area by Nationals Stadium," says Jordan Goldstein, AIA, whose architecture, interior and furniture designs have garnered regional and national awards. Goldstein, one of Gensler DC's trio of newly-installed managing directors, adds that "there's a new openness, an embracing of design innovation in this city, and it's invigorating to be a part of that. On all our projects, large and small, we thrive on the challenge of creating a unique experience that captures the imagination."

Members of teams from two or more of the Gensler DC office's fourteen practice areas often collaborate on a given project to realize a client's vision, whatever the scope of work. This cross-disciplinary collaboration enables Gensler to seamlessly blend traditional architecture, design and planning with leading-edge disciplines that include brand design -- the art and science of weaving of a theme throughout the physical and emotional experience of a place via a variety of media.

So fundamental is this collaborative approach to Gensler's way of working that the office has undergone a landmark transformation of its DC studio structure to nurture this inter-disciplinary approach in innovative "super-studios", aligning the diversified design talent of 350+ staff into studios in 3 market sectors: Work, Community and Lifestyle.

Gensler DC has been called upon to create distinctive experiences that respond to their clients' programs and vision on an intimate scale in projects like the renovation of the renowned Equinox restaurant, the styling of the popular BLT Steakhouse and the concept and design of celebrated restaurateur Jeff Tunks' much-anticipated new Reston eatery. All of these projects are infused with the attention to every detail -- from the picturesque to the practical -- that characterizes the firm's holistic approach to design.
