Proxicast today announced its all-new LAN Cell 2™ 3G cellular router, an upgradable third-generation (3G) high-speed secure VPN cellular router. The LAN-Cell 2 is a rugged commercial-grade cellular router with enterprise-class routing, security and VPN features that allows multiple PC’s, laptops, webcams, controllers, PLCs, ATMs, VoIP phones and other Ethernet-based devices to simultaneously and securely share a single cellular data account for primary or backup connectivity.
The LAN Cell 2 is the next generation successor to Proxicast’s award-winning LAN-Cell Mobile Gateway, the industry’s first commercially available integrated multi-port cellular VPN router which Proxicast introduced in 2003. Delivering easy, instant wireless high-speed Internet access anywhere cellular service is available, the LAN-Cell 2 provides seamless Internet connectivity and unmatched security to PCs and laptops as well as devices that were never designed for connection to the Internet, such as sensors, data loggers, PLCs, ATMs, and traffic controls -- all without requiring any additional software or configuration of remote equipment. With the rapidly growing prevalence of 3G services such as EVDO Rev A and HSDPA/HSUPA offering bandwidths of over 1,000 Kbps downstream and 500 Kbps upstream, many devices, applications and locations requiring broadband Internet connectivity can now “go cellular”.
Based on an open and upgradable PC-Card (PCMCIA) modem architecture, the LAN-Cell 2 is compatible with all major worldwide cellular (wireless) carriers and standards including (CDMA) EVDO Rev A, EVDO Rev 0, 1xRTT (1x) and (GSM) HSUPA, HSDPA, UMTS, WCDMA, EDGE and GPRS. The LAN-Cell 2 supports high speed PC-Card modems from manufacturers and network operators such as Sierra Wireless, Novatel Wireless, Huawei, Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Alltel, Telus, Bell Mobility, Digicel, Vodaphone, Orange, O2 and many others.
The LAN Cell 2’s rugged modular metal chassis includes Proxicast’s innovative Card Guard™ that completely protects the cellular PC-Card modem from harm or tampering and provides a secure external antenna connection jack. The chassis also features Proxicast’s unique Card Lock™ system that prevents the PC Card from coming loose or being unintentionally removed from the LAN Cell.
The LAN Cell 2 has routing and security features typically found only in wired corporate routers costing thousands more, yet it is priced competitively with stand-alone cellular modems. The LAN Cell’s NAT and advanced rule-based ICSA-certified SPI firewall provide highly granular security and policy enforcement for all remote devices and users. The built in ICSA-certified VPN client and server software eliminates the need to configure individual devices and extends secure corporate networks to devices that cannot run VPN client software. Static and policy-based routing, bandwidth management and application level gateway features enable the implementation of sophisticated routing and traffic shaping solutions.
To help users manage cellular data plan costs, the LAN Cell 2 includes Proxicast’s Cell-Sentry™ Cellular Data Budgeting System. Cell-Sentry monitors the LAN-Cell’s cellular data usage and can alert users when predefined thresholds are reached or even block additional cellular usage to avoid overage charges which can be as high as $0.50/MB ($500/GB) or $0.25/minute even on so-called “unlimited” usage plans.
The LAN-Cell 2 also incorporates a built-in wireless 802.11 a/b/g WiFi access point, a 4 port 10/100 Ethernet Switch, a 10/100 Ethernet WAN port and a RS-232 serial port. Auto fail-over switching between the Cellular, WAN & serial ports enables the LAN-Cell 2 to combine both 3G cellular, DSL, cable, satellite and other networks to offer unprecedented speed, reliability and quality of service.
