An exciting, all-new art and design show for Boston launches April 3-6, 2008 when Fusco & Four, producers of the Boston International Fine Art Show (BIFAS), present AD 20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries. The show takes place at The Cyclorama, Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street in Boston’s South End.
With 40 fine art galleries and design exhibitors of the highest quality from across the United States and Europe, the show will include major decorative arts movements such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Scandinavian Design, and Mid-Century Modern side by side with 21st century fine art and design. The show will feature furniture, glass, ceramics, decorative arts, jewelry, as well as a stunning array of paintings, sculpture, prints, and photography from the last 108 years.
Weekend show hours are: Friday 1-9, Saturday 11-8, and Sunday 11-5. Friday evening from 5:00pm to 9:00pm is “New Collectors’ Night”, with a reception and special programs designed to introduce new collectors to the world of modern art and design. Admission at the door or in advance is $15 (under 12 free), and includes a complimentary 96-page catalog, coat check, special guest speakers, and re-admission throughout the weekend. The show opens with a Gala Preview to benefit the Boston Architectural College on Thursday, April 3 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. The BAC, New England's largest independent, accredited college of spatial design, offers programs in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, design studies, and more. Friday evening, April 4th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm will be “New Collectors’ Night”, with a reception and programs designed to introduce new collectors to the world of 20th and 21st century design. Regular admission of $15 at the door or in advance applies. Friday evening programs include: 5:30pm - “A Virtual Walking Tour of Art Deco in Boston,” presented by Tony Fusco, President of the Art Deco Society of Boston; and 6:30pm – “The Art of Collecting Photography”, presented by Tony Decaneas of Boston’s Panopticon Gallery.
Sunday, April 6th at 12:30pm, Boston Architectural College will present it’s 16th Annual Cascieri Lectureship in the Humanities, with guest speaker Christy MacLear, Executive Director of the Phillip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. The program will be presented in the Roberts Studio Theatre at the Boston Center for the Arts, adjacent to the Cyclorama in the Calderwood Pavilion. Free and open to the public. Space is limited. Sunday, April 6th at 2:30pm - London Art Deco - A slide lecture on London’s rich Art Deco architectural heritage, presented by Arnold Schwartzman, author of the book London Art Deco. (Hudson Hills Press, 2007) Free with show admission.
Concurrent Exhibition:
Now Through April 5th – “Kinesthetics: Modernist Design 1925-2000” – An exhibition of modernist furniture design hosted by Boston Architectural College at the McCormack Gallery, 320 Newbury Street ground floor gallery. Free and open to the public. The exhibition features twenty-seven tables and chairs including such iconic designs as Marcel Breuer’s Wassily (1925) chair, Charlotte Perriand’s LC4 Chaise Longue (1928), and Eero Saarinen’s Womb Side Table (1957). These and others in the exhibition are among the most pivotal works of the century.
Among the numerous outstanding modernist exhibitors coming to Boston for the show are: Geoffrey Diner Gallery (DC), who will exhibit Postwar design including furniture by George Nakashima; Greg Nanamura (NY), who features Art Deco and Mid-Century furnishings; James Infante (NJ), who has a strong specialization in the Vienna Secession; Titus Omega (UK), specializing in Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative arts; Didier Antiques (UK), focusing on artist-designed jewelry; Alastair Crawford (NY), exclusively selling George Jensen silver; Jason Jacques (NY), the country’s leading dealer in Art Nouveau ceramics; and 4PM (NY), presenting Mid-Century Modern furniture and Scandinavian ceramics.
Contemporary fine art and design will be presented by Holsten Galleries of Stockbridge (MA), internationally-recognized for glass artists such as Dale Chihuly; Lanoue Fine Art (MA), whose Newbury Street Gallery has captured growing attention in recent years; D SCALE (MA), a contemporary design showroom recently launched by Boston interior Designer Dennis Duffy; Kulin Modern (MA), headed by Jacob Kulin, and showing modernist-inspired contemporary studio furniture and sculpture, and others.
Fine art galleries include Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts (NY), specializing in early 20th century American art; Tom Veilleux Gallery (ME), recognized for their specialization in Rockwell Kent and William Zorach; Susan Teller Gallery (NY), known for both paintings and fine prints of the WPA period; David Lusenhop Fine Art (IL), Vintage posters will be offered by International Poster Gallery (MA); and Panopticon Gallery (MA), offering a stunning range of original photography.
Co-producers Tony Fusco and Robert Four have been promoting the arts in Boston for 30 years. They are also the producers of the annual Boston International Fine Art Show (BIFAS), which will have its 12th Anniversary November 20-23, 2008 at the same location. No strangers to modern design, Tony is founder of the Art Deco Society of Boston (ADSB), and served as Facilitator for the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS) for 7 years. He is the author of five collecting guides on Art Deco and vintage posters.
