According to National Geographic photographer Mike Nichols, being a committed photographer means several things—you have to be focused, be able to take rejections and deal with new cultures and places, and not be afraid of disease.
Gary Garner, world adventurer and author of the new book Through the Eyes of Madness, recently returned from a trip across the seven continents where he created journals full photos and artwork. All of these are featured in his book and on his Website, and have been spotlighted during the Sundance Film Festival as well.
“All of the artwork and visuals in Through the Eyes of Madness are from my journals—the sketches, drawings and paintings are all pictures that I took with my mind,” says Mr. Garner. “Each piece has a story to tell beyond what is evident on the surface.”
For the past five years, Mr. Garner has literally been homeless and jobless, and more or less without material possessions. While roaming each of the seven continents in search of a simpler life, he experienced:
• Witnessing a brutal murder on the South China Sea
• The wrath of an angry mob in the midst of a Nepalese civil war
• His own near-death at the heights of Mt. Everest
• Being ambushed and robbed in Costa Rica by very unusual suspects
• Countless other harrowing escapes that illustrated valuable and moving life lessons.
Each chapter of his new book is rich with details of his real life-and-death adventures. Mr. Garner continually put himself in situations that were seemingly un-survivable—and lived to tell about them.
Beyond the artwork and adventure, however, Through the Eyes of Madness also contains an intriguing twist: Mr. Garner has a mysterious surprise waiting for anyone who can decipher the encrypted codes in his journal, which can be found both throughout the book as well as on his website.
“From beginning to end, the book is laced with a visual and mathematical code—but unlike its fictional cousins, this book’s secret is very real,” says Mr. Garner.
