Hiring firms can sharply increase the number of qualified candidates they are considering to fill their open positions, according to CareerSoft CEO Russ Curtis. In a recent interview, Curtis outlined three strategies that employers can use to locate job seekers with the right skill set for their open positions.
Effective Job Postings: According to Curtis, job seekers are most attracted to compelling job postings. "Exciting, descriptive ads are more likely to catch a candidate's attention." Curtis says that employers can use online job posting resources to describe job opportunities in a way that leaves a candidate enthusiastic about the work. Newspaper-style classified ads may omit important information about a position, and lead qualified candidates to overlook ads that are too vague.
Using Available Online Tools: Curtis says that online job posting sites like Monster.com and HotJobs offer more than just job posting space. The sites also offer extensive resume databases. "Employers who understand the potential of resume databases have a much better chance of locating the talent they're looking for," says Curtis.
Candidate Searches Must Be Extensive: "Employers must look at all of the candidate sources that are available to them," says Curtis. Aside from the major sites, Curtis says there are job board aggregators and industry-specific sites where the well-qualified candidates can be found. "In most cases, employers need to look for the right candidates, instead of relying strictly on job postings to produce them."
CareerSoft takes a different approach to these problems with its Candidate Search service. "We start with well-written job postings that attract the right candidates," says Curtis. "We also make extensive use of job sites, not only to publicize opportunities, but also to search for the candidates who best fit the employer's needs." Curtis continues: "We use hundreds of sources to find candidates - many times more than even the largest employers do.
"We use research professionals to locate high-quality talent, and conduct our searches several times to make sure we haven't missed anyone."
Using this comprehensive approach, CareerSoft can often locate 20-40 qualified candidates for each position for less than what employers spend on in-house searches or by working with recruiters. "With Candidate Search, we empower our clients to become their own recruiters," says Curtis. "We support them through the recruiting process, so they can make the most of the unique service we offer."
