The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum and JPL Productions have completed a new educational documentary on the American experience in World War II in the Pacific.
The program, titled “Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom: WWII in the Pacific,” features an on-camera teen narrator surrounded by a virtual set that includes images of famous people, maps and scenes from the campaign.
This new documentary, created for the classroom, features Pennsylvania soldiers, Marines and sailors who served valiantly in the Pacific. In their own words, they describe the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle for Iwo Jima, attacks on kamikazes and the Surrender Ceremonies in Tokyo Bay.
Through interviews and historical stock footage, the 49-minute documentary shows how American servicemen faced a formidable enemy in the Pacific. Nearly 52,000 U.S. servicemen lost their lives in the Pacific -- all in the name of freedom.
“These were ordinary men who served with extraordinary courage. Without their sacrifices, it’s unlikely we would enjoy the freedoms we have today,” said Joanna Murphy, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Veterans Museum.
The documentary, along with supplemental educational materials including lesson plans, is available through the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum by calling 610-566-0788.
Pennsylvania Veterans Museum seeks to preserve the legacy of all Pennsylvania military veterans by creating a living history of their service experiences. Through the Museum’s efforts, today’s students and future generations will have a better understanding of the true nature of war and recognize the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.
JPL Productions has produced other educational documentaries for the PA Veterans Museum including: “On Freedom’s Wings: The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen,” “Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom: WWII in Europe,” and “In the Company of Heroes,” about the legendary Band of Brothers.
