Museum On The Go, the first portal for the download of digital museum objects to mobile devices, has dedicated a new section of its website to the leading collection of the V&A. The digital gallery comprises more than 100 images from a variety of periods and topics and is available for download to mobile devices in more than 50 countries worldwide. For the first time, 30 animated videos have been especially adapted to the small screens of mobile phones to show objects and fashion from the last century.
Images have been carefully selected and range from wallpapers and Japanese woodcuts, to toys and textiles. The collection also includes historical photographs of personalities such as the Beatles and HM Queen Elizabeth II which can be downloaded as screensavers on your personal device. Digital postcards are also available, with themes ranging from a Victorian Christmas to Easter cards and poster advertisements.
Museum On the Go offers visitors the possibility of sending images from the V&A Collections to the mobile phones of friends and family all over the world.
Fashion gains a new lease of life through video clips of 5 -10 seconds rotating through 360 degrees on the screen. Videos show animated toys, furniture and design objects such as the Emerson Patriot radio. The video clips allow the user to view museum items in a new way, taking advantage of the multimedia possibilities of modern mobile phones.
By using new mediums of mobile communication, the collaboration between the V&A and Museum On The Go enables young, culturally-aware and media savvy users to explore objects from the greatest museum of Art and Design without actually being in the museum!
