The European rotary UPS market accounted for a very limited share of the total European UPS market in 2007. However, its share is increasing rapidly, spurred by the augmented demand for larger power systems that can provide backup for longer periods. Moreover, the power requirements of various equipment and applications are constantly rising, encouraging the uptake of rotary UPS systems.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (powersupplies.frost.com), European Rotary UPS Markets, finds that the market earned revenues of €179.4 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach €447.5 million in 2014.

“Low maintenance, along with high efficiency, results in low total cost of ownership (TCO) for rotary UPS systems, stimulating demand for them,” notes Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Malavika Tohani. “Indeed, a distinct advantage that rotary systems offer over static UPS systems for higher power ranges is the low TCO (euro per watt), which acts as a major incentive for applications demanding large amounts of power.”

Power requirements are increasing at a rapid pace, putting pressure on manufacturers to build UPS systems with higher power output. Rotary UPS systems offer more bang per buck for high power ranges and the best power/floor space ratio, resulting in significant cost savings.

However, high initial investment costs and low end-user awareness are dampening the demand for rotary UPS systems. Uptake levels are also being hindered by the persistent popularity and dominance of static technology. End users opine that static UPS systems are superior, using the latest power electronics, whereas rotary UPS systems are obsolete.

“Static UPS systems dominate the European UPS market and are more popular with end users,” adds Tohani. “Not surprisingly, the European rotary UPS market accounted for only 15 per cent of the total European UPS market in 2007.”

Conducting training sessions, seminars and presentations for mechanical and electrical contractors, consultants, design and build contractors and distributors among others, coupled with focused marketing and public relations activities, will help increase end-user awareness of rotary UPS systems, boosting market prospects.
