Greensboro, NC, United States, 01/25/2008 - Dr. Manfred Wentz, U.S. Director for Oeko-Tex, will present “Textile Product Certification and Textile Ecology” at the AATCC Pacific Section meeting in Santa Fe Springs, CA, on February 20, 2008.

Dr. Wentz was invited to speak at the AATCC Pacific Section meeting after his presentation at the international AATCC Symposium entitled “Fashion Garment Washing: Trends, Fabrics, Technologies and Sustainability” that was held in Long Beach, CA on December 13. That meeting was attended by about 200 AATCC members from around the world. Dr. Wentz spoke about textile ecology and sustainability.
Stuart Williamson, Chair of the AATCC Pacific Section, says, “The West Coast textile industry is very interested in textile safety and ecology. Companies in the apparel and home furnishings segments are particularly sensitive to the growing consumer demand for safe textile products. Dr. Wentz is a global authority on the topic and we are pleased to have him share his expertise with our membership.”

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification guarantees manufacturers, retailers, and consumers that textile products are free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances that can be dangerous to humans. The International Oeko-Tex Association’s 14 independent facilities test textiles for substances that are prohibited and regulated by law as well for substances that are known to be harmful but are not yet regulated.
Already well established in Europe, Dr. Wentz has been instrumental in expanding Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification in the U.S. His work with fiber and fabric makers, textile product manufacturers, retailers, and industry associations has increased the eco-label’s position in this country. Dr. Wentz has served on several environmental task forces created by leading U.S. retailers, industry groups, academia, and government agencies. He is a member of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) Environmental Task Force that last year published their first Restricted Substance List (RSL) for textiles and apparel. On December 4, Dr. Wentz also addressed automotive experts at the ITB Automotive Seating Systems Conference in Detroit, MI on Oeko-Tex and the ecology and safety of car interior textiles.
