A service, Dadnab, will help them avoid traffic and parking hassles by planning their trips on public transportation using text messaging.
SXSW (sxsw.com) is an annual conference that showcases music, film, and interactive talent and enables them to meet and share ideas. The event attracts nearly 10,000 people to Austin, Texas every March. This year, the event will take place March 7 – 16.
"During SXSW, getting around by car is inconvenient due to limited parking and traffic jams, says Dadnab's founder, Roger L. Cauvin, a long-time Austin resident. "Consequently, many visitors opt for public transportation to commute between their hotels and downtown. Knowing which buses to take, and at what time, is a challenge."
With Dadnab, an Austin user sends an SMS text message with an origin, destination, and optional departure or arrival time to austin[.]dadnab.com. The service replies with step-by-step instructions for reaching the desired destination most efficiently. Instructions, examples, and support are available through Dadnab’s Website. Users do not have to register beforehand, and Dadnab offers the service at no charge.
Capital Metro (capmetro.org) has been Austin's exclusive provider of public transportation since 1985. Dadnab provides text message users with route and schedule information for Capital Metro buses.
Cauvin notes that both Capital Metro and Dadnab experienced a surge in usage during last year's SXSW Festivals.
Dadnab debuted in Austin but also serves the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Portland, Seattle, and the tri-state New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area.
